ClairAlience Parasympathetic Breath Week
NAMASTE BEAUTIFUL YOGIS,
I have been going through Andrew Huberman’s podcasts and applying them to classes. He has a neuroscience podcast that is quite popular amongst the workout community and the body hacking community. He explores different movements and breathwork amongst other things in relation to neurons and hormones. The podcasts are quite long so for those of you who cannot dedicate the time – I am doing the homework for all of us and putting it in practical classes where we can get straight to the application of the scientific findings. Many of his findings are studies I have come across in the past in relation to HIIT and yoga, breath, and movement and they are already applied in older classes.
An interesting podcast is the one he did on Estrogen and Testosterone where one of the main takeaways (from a 2-hour packed with info podcast) is that deep breath and complete exhalation optimize our hormones; in particular dopamine and testosterone. The opposite which is systemic in our society – mouth breathing or incomplete exhalations lead to carbon dioxide build-up and inadequate dopamine production; low testosterone. So for this reproductive system month – a reminder to breathe deeply; to exhale completely.
Next week we will go into breath more. One of the most powerful things we can learn in life is to develop the habit to breathe through the mouth and to take deep breaths even when we are not aware of our breath. To create a positive habitual pattern – deep nose breathing. It is beyond a doubt proven to balance and optimize our hormones. So the ancient yogis were right in emphasizing it for health and beyond that for expansion of consciousness. Huberman doesn’t deal with the magical and unseen aspect of life- he discusses what can be proven in a scientific lab. The overlapping of the spiritual texts and his findings is just a great confirmation and balance for me. I have loved these science studies since I started to be interested in yoga and HIIT. I love to connect dots and ultimately to see unity as the fabric of reality.
